On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary, ukrainian band Foa Hoka presents unique compilation: the 90 best tracks in digital format and also on 30 craft USB flash drives for true audiophiles. The listener is offered a kind of expedition: industrial and neo-folk hits of the 90’s, released by the Polish label Koka Records, experiments of the 2000’s, electronic dance mutants of the 2010’s and the present. What is uniqueness of this compilation? Of course, in the variety of a number of unreleased compositions of different years. Some tracks are remasters of original master tapes, as well as modern reworks, mixes, versions and edits of Foa Hoka’s tracks over a thirty-year history. Foa Hoka unexpectedly combined all current genres of modern music – from industrial, noise, techno and house to postpunk, dub, funk, krautrock, folk, ambient ad infinitum… Since 2003 Foa Hoka is a multi-stylistic project open to many musicians from Ukraine and around the world. The group creates their compositions using a huge arsenal of vintage analog synthesizers, live instruments, various bizarre samples, psychedelic noises. Here, the original electronics merge with the drive and energy of the rock band.

In the summer of 2017, a young multi-instrumentalist Misha Khudenok AKA Cybermonk and Dmytro Kurovskiy met in the Midi Free studio. The musicians decided to experiment with various styles of dance music. The painstaking production was started immediately utilizing new electronic devices, the archival sample base of Midi Free studio, and the musical developments of Foa Hoka of different times. It has become clear that the Kurovskiy & Cybermonk tandem is remarkable thanks to the insights of the new generation combined with the hardened experience led to the clear understanding of the main principles of dance culture: positive energy and a fresh modern sound. Brand new compositions, full of freedom and humor, began to emerge like mushrooms after the rain on this basis. This is the result of dozens of music sessions in Midi Free, where almost every week new drum machine, oldschool devices, wind and exotic instruments were applied. The resource of the legendary synthesizers Midi Free studio was used as well. The variety of notable performers also contributed to this work: the well-known ethno singer Vera Ibryamova-Syvoraksha, Anna Heller, Valeria Matvienko, Dima Silich from Flying Super Pension duo & Kyiv based producer Serge Dubrovskiy AKA Dubmasta Selecta. This artistic process was built solely on intuitive sensations, reflections and vibrations; internal and external dada pulse. The creative musical trip lasted almost a year and a half. Of course, musicians were excited and inspired by various themes of modernity: social, cultural, modern musical mutations, and world experiments in the field of cinema, fashion, visual and performance images. “Life Imitates Kitsch” – such a wild slogan can arise on the territory of the Ukrainian ghetto. Dark humor, self-irony, illusions, reflections, and chaos intersect in the album ‘’Music Du Monde Fou – Music of the Mad World’’ with vivid musical comics, fantasies and sound metamorphoses, effects and incendiary rhythms.

“Наприкінці 2018 року Foa Hoka відзначає 20-річчя виходу в світ двох тематично пов’язаних альбомів “Fon” та “Fonogram” презентацією третьої частини цього циклу – альбому “Fonissimon”. 1998 рік в історії Foa Hoka був періодом схильності її учасників до сеансів своєрідного самітництва у Міді Фрі Студіо, віч на віч із зграєю монструозних напівфункціонуючих зразків побічного виробництва підприємств ВПК радяньської доби. Обидві частини диптиху складалися з 16 пронумерованих актів фіксації певних конфігурацій звукового простору, як результату приборкання частково керованих або повністю самокерованих аналогових синтезаторів. Унікальність кожного акту полягає в неможливості відтворення їх наново через технічний стан цього арсеналу: процеси синтезу звуку при сталому положенні регуляторів набували змін та розвивалися непередбачувано, а після вимкнення та повторного включення апарати вже давали зовім інший результат. Тому кожен акт являє собою звіт про кількагодинну експедицію в країну заблукалих електронів. Міні-альбом “Fonissimon”, який Foa Hoka наразі пропонує увазі слухача, створювався протягом 2017 та 2018 років на основі селекту з архіву грувів, лупів та сємплів, що видобувалися протягом 20 років з раритетних та сучасних апаратів з колекції Міді Фрі Студіо, та концептуально пов’язаних із первинними маршрутами, прокладеними у двох попередніх релізах. Починаючи із 1998 року частина треків першої частини “Fon” були візуалізовані київським творчим об’єднанням Sampled Pictures (Олег Чорний та Геннадій Хмарук). “The story of creating “Citius Altius Fortius” started during the summer 2016. After listening to Kosmischer Läufer releases I asked myself – what if I produce a kraut electro track? It was a new call for me. The original idea was to embrace the sound from the analog sources only. Once visiting Midi Free Studio in August 2016 I discovered really nice pre-recorded sequence from soviet synth in its library. I decided to take this sequence as a base for the future composition. That was the very beginning of a long way.
From September to December 2016 “Citius Altius Fortius” was being created. Taking all available analog synths and drum machines, starting from Korg MS-10 to newest Japanese boxed JMT Synth, I produced a 7-minutes long story. This is an ode to Olympic spirit, the long distance marathon with very emotional finish, that can be heard in reprise episode in the very end of the composition. A featured guest Dmytro Kurovskiy (Foa Hoka) with his vocals added the competing spirit vibe to this musical story.
It took 4 months to produce “Citius Altius Fortius”. Another month I spent looking for the sound engineer who could mix and master this composition. Not the average sound engineer but the one who completely understands the nature of kraut electronics. Finally I was lucky to find Stefano Moretti from Clockbeat Studio Berlin. He clearly conveyed the ideas I pursed in to the final mix. Also I have to mention Terri Kenyon who helped me to start fundraising campaign to mix and master track professionally. 
After official presentation at Hromadske Radio, “Citius Altius Fortius” gained attention from local and foreign listeners and sound producers. The received feedback was extremely positive. But the story of “Citius Altius Fortius” has not yet finished. The forthcoming release “Citius Altius Fortius Remixius” — is a new chapter, that contains original version plus 11 remixes (few from Foa Hoka family and others by our friends from Berlin, Barcelona, Kyiv, Odessa, Ternopil). I want to thank all who was involved and helped make Citius Altius Fortius happen.”

Foa Hoka is a legendary Ukrainian band, who since 1991 set themselves up on the scene of experimental and avant-garde music. One of their latest compositions is called “Freak Veteran”, the title which describes their current status well: loads of experience, years of hard work, and yet they keep on pushing further, challenging and seeking new means of expression. All these years they sought to combine various styles and mold together different genres. In their efforts they always moved off the beaten tracks and strove toward innovation. The band builds their compositions out of large arsenal of samples, analog synthesizers, live instruments, psychedelic noises and computer generated sounds. Accordingly, primeval electronics merge with drive and energy of rock band, hypnotic rhythms are laid over with samples, sound effects, guitar riffs and saxophone, next comes along easy-listening hurly-burly mixed with the surfing music, then a deep bass leads into space and psychedelic rock music. Add here various elements of the world music, funk and dub, and you get the picture.

Foa Hoka’s vocal is not traditional singing but rather reminds one of charm mantras, primeval exclamations and functions as shaman’s murmurs. Tribal sound colors are enhanced by a laid-back, rusty and simultaneously spacey, rumbling sound which combines all the various stylistic licks.

Their musical eclecticism is defined by the human factor. Foa Hoka musicians are people of polar energy charge which leads to the unexpected musical ideas. Current line-up consists of: Dmytro Kurovsky (flute, vocals); former leader of the famous Kazma-Kazma Evgen Hodosh (guitar, Moog, percussion); and Serge Protsenko (saxophone, clarinet). The band performs live, multi-media shows, which were presented at various venues in the Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Poland and Russia.
Colorful program, solid concert reputation and eccentric image have well earned Foa Hoka a special place inside the Ukrainian indie music scene.

Bio:

One of the most extravagant experimental formations that Ukrainian alternative scene ever had. The project was launched in the beginning of 90’s under the supervision of once legendary now half forgotten east Ukrainian cultural organization “Novaya Scena”, which main achievement became CD compilation of Ukrainian alternative music on german label “What So Funny About”. Foa Hoka had their debut there, as a post industrial neo folk combo.

The band started putting together early 90s industrial trends with sharp lo-fi grooves boldly combined with lush melody polyphonia and unexpectedly emotional crooning. Past decade brought some specific changes to their conception. At this very moment, after Germany and Poland tours, a number of CD releases & bootlegs, numerous appearances on various modern art festivals, the band strongly holds its position as Ukraine’s most consistent and up-to-date underground project. Foa Hoka was formed in January 1991 in Chernihiv by Dmytro Kurovsky [vocals/synth/flute] and Vladyslav Dikhtyarenko [synth/guitars/programming].

In 1994 they were joined by Ivan Moskalenko [bass], known as DJ Derbastler. In 2002 Foa Hoka becomes an open project for all artists who just feels the same. In the spirit of contemporaneity, the band’s music evolves constantly. In 2005 Serge Dubsrovsky AKA DJ Dubmasta ( http://soundcloud.com/dubmasta ) began participating in live gigs and studio sessions, before & after every live performance he plays DJ set based on Foa Hoka productions. The artists are continually searching for new, hopefully surprising musical ideas, primarily in Foa Hoka’s own Midi Free Studio.

Since 1997 the band collaborates with experimental video producers Oleh Chorny and Hennadiy Khmaruk also known as the Sampled Pictures creative unit. In cooperation they created a number of music videos presented in Ukraine, Poland, Germany, France, Netherlands, Russia and the United States. Foa Hoka has performed in Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia and Ukraine, but the band engages primarily in studio work. Favorite sounds and instruments include flutes, violins, distortion effects, brass instruments, retro analogue synthesizers, sub bass, guitars, hypnotic samples, abstract beats & dub vibrations. Foa Hoka’s music is described as experimental rock combined with post-industrial electronics, minimal techno, psychedelic ambient and new- and cold-wave elements. It is sometimes called “folk industrial” or “uneasy listening” in “quasi-lounge” atmosphere.

The albums “Worldwide Remixed Vol.1 & 2” on Sale & SKP Records represent different remixes by various underground artists from Ukraine, Germany, Austria and Russia. Foa Hoka has greatly updated its studio and rare analogue equipment during last few years, today guitarist & producer Evgen Hodosh, from famous Kazma Kazma band, with saxophonist Sergey Protsenko joins the project. Brief synopsis: FON album was recorded in 1998 and its visualization has been started simultaneously. Ancient analog Soviet synthesizers have been used in the process, so, the results of syntheses were unpredictable. The uniqueness of every Act is determined by the fact that it is impossible to reproduce the sound of any of the performances.
Each of the Acts is a report on the expedition to the country of lost electrons.
